Heightened Awareness Along The Path

Going into minimalism for awhile. This oil painting called "Hightened Awareness Along The Path" is a long overdue creation. Ever since my return to painting in 1999 I wanted to do large scale color canvases. Well, the time has come for them to appear in my reality. This one is so red it can't be ignored. I've always been drawn to the use of color for evoking emotions.

Horizon 23

This is a new pastel painting in the horizon series. The format of low horizon skyscapes allows me endless variations of a central theme.

The Secrets Of Red And Yellow

This painting is part of a series of stripe paintings that I am wanting to get back to. Working in a format of 4x6 feet to assure visual impact, I'm using color as the subject, keeping the variations relative to a particular hue. The series is up to five so far and they have all found homes. This one hangs at Unity Temple in Kansas City, Missouri.

Pink Tulip Study

The inspiration for this painting comes from all the color that appears in the spring. I found some flower beds that were lit at night and the color really popped out of the darkness. I'm creating impact with high contrast yet retaining a softness with the loosely rendered edges.

Horizon # 21

This oil painting is part of an ongoing series. I'm very inspired by the emotion of color. A simple low horizon composition allows me to use color as the subject, almost approaching minimalism. This piece was part of a multiple purchase to hang with three other of my horizon paintings.

Red Rose Study

There seems to be a common theme in my recent posts, that would be the color red. This small oil painting is a study for a larger painting. I am inspired by the abstract effect of the arial view of flowers. Cropping one side allowed me to create an off center composition yet it remains visually balanced.

Two Apples

This oil painting was a return to my traditional roots. Lately my work has evolved away from classic realism however its always good to challenge my observation skills by working from life occasionally. As with my other paintings note the light coming from the right.

The Tulip Study.

This painting of dramatically lit tulips is a study for a larger work. Here I'm using the chiaroscuro effect. Chiaroscuro is an Italian artistic term used to describe the dramatic effect of contrasting areas of light and dark. I'm keeping the palette very limited and letting the light and dark do the work. As with my paintings of trees I choose to have the light coming from the right.

Italian Cypress In Red

The "Italian Cypress In Red" manifested into reality after a short move to Sacramento, California. Cypress trees are abundant in the region and I was really intrigued by them.
This painting shipped to Renee Taylor Gallery in Sedona, Arizona a few days ago.

Recent Group Show

This picture is from the group show at Leawood Fine Art on June 26th. It was a great night. Connecting with the people that enjoy my work is always a wonderful experience. Sometimes all the hours creating the art can be a lonely existence so getting to meet the art enthusiasts at the openings is always enjoyable.

The Happy Tree Series

Connecting with people is my goal as an artist.

When I first painted Happy Red Tree back in 2003 it sold so fast at Blue Gallery in Kansas City that no one had a chance to see it at the opening. I decided to paint another one and to my pleasure it sold quickly also. As a follow up, since I like to work in series, I've painted Happy Yellow Tree, Happy Orange Tree, Happy Green Tree, Happy Blue Tree and many others. They have become a collector series that my galleries always want to have available. The image seems to connect with the viewer on a personal and emotional level.

"Reluctant To Change" commission

"Reluctant To Change" commission for a buyer in San Francisco. Just wrapped it up tonight and sent the image to Renee Taylor Gallery in Sedona, Arizona for approval.

Most of my stylized tree paintings have a human psychological underpinning. This one in particular, the green tree is not wanting to join the crowd in the process of change. In some ways I'm painting my own life experience.
